PeyoteCree

“Meewasin Oma” (It’s Good), she strongly affirms her belief and faith of the “Holy Medicine”. Peyote has and continues to be used by Victoria Benson and family for the past six generations. She verbalizes her relationship to George Lightfoot, the founder of peyote ceremonies in Canada, to be her grandfather. Victoria doesn’t show her age of 79 years, she is still physically dependant and spiritually vibrant, with no hesitation, she gets up from her chair to make tea. The interview takes place in her home of many years, an Indian Affairs house; visibly the house has seen some make over and renovations over the years. Victoria is widow for some years now; she continues to reside on Red Pheasant Reserve in Saskatchewan. She lives with a son, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren, which she raised herself.

My belief in this peyote became strong over time. If one of my children became sick, I wouldn’t think twice I would sponsor a meeting, so prayers can be said for them to get well. My son Bert had enlargement of his liver, he was small, and he could barely crawl. Bert couldn’t keep his food down; doctors said they would need to operate as soon as possible. The doctors weren’t sure if he would survive or how long he would allow me to take Bert home for a while, the doctors gave me four days. The moment I arrived at home I sent for help, people from Mosquito came over, right at the old house. The started to feed Bert this peyote, drum was tied and this went on for four days. I was very afraid, but I put my belief in this peyote. I see my son suffering and crying, I never gave up hope, I prayed for a miracle.

After the fours days were up I took him back to the doctors. Bert was visibly sick, at moments he eyes rolled back, he was fevered. Upon arrival the hospital the doctor indicated he was very sick., he was sill feeling Th medicine. At Battleford hospital it was decided Bert needed to transfer to Saskatoon University Hospital, so off he went in an ambulance. I was not sure if I was going to see my son again, I was not sure he was going to live. I prayed to the Creator and the Holy Medicine to bring my son home, I put my belief in this peyote. This medicine answered my prayers, I thank the Creator I see my son today walking around Healthy (Victoria begins to cry, in showing her thanks). Next day he returned back to North Battleford hospital and was ready for discharge, we went and brought him home. A letter was given to us at the hospital explaining his liver was normal and the swelling or enlarging went away. From the day I brought my son home to this day I well always believe in this medicine, to the day I die.

This Medicine is difficult to use , there are many challenges on the road of life. Our faith in a higher being will determine if we get through those challengers. The most important thing to remember is the love for our children. If our love is strong things will be good. All people must remember children are a loaner to us, we must show our children build love and kindness needed in this world. Our children in turn walk in our footsteps; we lead the path for our children. I will give Medicine to my grandchildren; it will not harm them in any way. I know from experience this Medicine is good, “Meewasin Oma”
