Soufy’s roots are in Southwest Detroit, the grandson of Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation grandmother, his music embodies the urban native experience. Soufy’s lyrical edge comes from the traumas shared by both urban and reservation natives, his mother abused drugs and his father was incarcerated. Soufy’s music narrates his own journey, struggling with addiction and breaking free from these trends. He found solace in creation and connecting with his culture by attending two Detroit indigenous-centered schools. Soufy joined the Raiz Up, a xicano and indigenous hip hop and art collective that has been using art to organize against the financial takeover of Detroit, water shutoffs and the poisoning of Flint. Taking aim at the Flint water crisis, Soufy wrote the song, “Pay 2 Be Poisoned” infusing indigenous knowledge with a sharp analysis of societal problems. The song was featured on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman, CBC Canada, Indian Country Today Media Network, Native Trailblazers and cited in academic journals. He collaborated with Native Keyz (of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe) to release his first official solo LP entitled, “The Ogitchidaa Project” in 2016. The best is yet to come from this MC’s young career; he wants to use his sounds to bridge the experiences of natives in cities and reservations by working with artists from those communities. He has been invited to play venues across the country, facilitates workshops on native culture, racism, and water rights, and stays grounded through participating in ceremony.
