La Sexta Vocal

ContemporaryMexican

Band founded during the year of 2012 in the mountain town of Ocotepec, north of the Mexican state of Chiapas, as a form of vindication for the communities of the Zoque region through the fusion of traditional and contemporary music – joining traditional drum and reed flute with ska and rocksteady rythms – and, above all, return to the use of the Zoque mother language as a form of musical expression. "La Sexta Vocal" (The Sixth Vocal) alludes to the use of a sixth vocal in the zoquean alphabet.

The band debuted at the 2012 anniversary of the XECOPA indigenous broadcast station and released their first studio album "Ode mabaxä" (Zoque dream) two years after. Their latest release "Ipstäjk Witpä" (Labrynth pt. one) was recorded and mixed at Mexico City in the year 2017.

La Sexta Vocal has performed in Mexican music festivals such as Cumbre Tajín, Estruendo Multilingüe: Festival for Contemporary Indigenous Music; and in various events for Mexican cultural institutions in states such as Chiapas, Chihuahua, San Luis Potosí and Mexico City.
