Daniel Monkman AKA Zoon

SONG: Light Prism

Daniel Monkman AKA Zoon

In the Ojibway language, the word Zoongide’ewin means “bravery, courage, the Bear Spirit.” It’s no wonder Daniel Monkman adopted Zoon as his musical moniker. The Hamilton-based musician has spent the better part of his 28 years finding and channelling his strength to overcome such adversities as racism, poverty and addiction.

Like most things in his life, making the album didn’t come easy for Monkman. His gear was stolen, leaving him with virtually nothing and forcing him to get creative. He recorded the songs in his bedroom and his jam space, using only a Fender Deville guitar, a DigiTech delay pedal and - channelling his hero Kevin Shields - some “reverse engineering.” While there is a healthy population of nu-gazers creating beautiful noise all over the world, Zoon’s debut stands out from all the others. Bleached Wavves is notable not just for its breathtakingly inimitable sounds and giving birth to a new wave of indigenous shoegazers, but also for its modest, resourceful creation, the sign of a true sonic genius-in-the-making.

TO VIEW: IMA Music Video Competition Playlist

Joey Nowyk

Joey Nowyuk is an award-winning singer and songwriter from Pangnirtung Nunavut. Raised by a community that instilled in him the value of culture and language the arctic indie rocker first picked up the guitar when a travelling music workshop came to town and inspired him to keep playing – not an easy feat when guitar strings could not even be purchased in his remote community! Nevertheless his beat-heavy guitar driven songs – some in Inuktitut some in English – tell stories of his life up North always shining a ray of optimism and hope throughout.

“Nalligigakku (Because I Love Her)” is a funky and fun summer love song performed by the arctic indie rocker. The video was shot on location in Joey's hometown of Pangnirtung Nunavut. The song was produced by Thor Simonsen (Kelly Fraser, Aasiva, Angela Amarualik) and Dale Penner (Nickelback, Matthew Good Band). The song is the first release off Joey’s debut album, Tumitit (meaning “your footsteps” in Inuktitut), which is set for release in 2021.

With the upcoming release of his debut album, Joey Nowyuk aims to join the ranks of celebrated Inuit artists such as Beatrice Deer and Elisapie in strengthening his people’s language and culture. Joey Nowyuk plans to tour extensively in support of the album both across Canada and around the Arctic Circle.

The R.A.P. (The Road Allowance Peoples)

Like our people, we reside along the ditches of musical genres. The creators that form our group are, Coulee (Vocals/Songwriting), and Reil8 (Beats). The old wolves are our muse, as we tear up the dance floors, howl under the moon, and echo into tomorrow's.
